Governor, Lawmakers Seeking UP High-Voltage Power Connection with Lower Peninsula

LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Governor Snyder said during an energy roundtable discussion that he’s looking into how to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas with a high-capacity electrical line. Concerns about a January energy crisis that threatened to spike rates led to discussions by the Governor’s office and UP lawmakers with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, the entity that oversees transmission lines for the Lower Peninsula. Most of the UP power currently comes from Wisconsin-based power plants.
