PORTAGE (WKZO) — Portage City officials had to find additional funding after their biggest road project of the summer came in at bids way over their budget.
There will be three major construction projects disrupting traffic this summer in the Kalamazoo area. Rebuilding Sprinkle Ave. at I-94 is already underway. Phase two of the Stadium Drive interchange at U.S. 131 begins this coming Monday.
Tuesday night the Portage City Council approved additional funding to reconstruct Westnedge Avenue from Mall Drive to Dawnlee Avenue.
City Manager Larry Shaffer says they underestimated what the project would cost, combining state and city funding, they expected to spend about 1.8-million
. The lowest bid came in at 2.8-million.
Last night the Council approved dipping into reserves and other projects to cover the difference. That project is slated to begin this summer.
