BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — An early morning fire at the Arbors Apartment Complex off Capital Avenue in Battle Creek forced a mass evacuation this morning. Everyone made it out without injury, although a few were treated for mild smoke inhalation.
But there are questions this morning because there were no smoke alarms.
The 36-unit three-story structure was heavily damaged. Investigators aren’t saying if they suspect a cause but some tenants think it began in a second floor laundry room.
Tenants were forced out onto their balconies because the hallways were full of smoke. Some jumped but most were rescued by firefighters.
The Red Cross is assisting the displaced tenants.
