LANSING (WKZO)– As the state approaches the first anniversary of the Federal Court Decision briefly legalizing same-sex marriage in Michigan, Democratic State Lawmakers want to make it legal again, and not wait for the Supreme Court to rule.
Kalamazoo Democrat Jon Hoadley is a co-sponsor. He says they need to send a message to the Supreme Court so that they know Michigan wants is rights protected under the 14th Amendment.
It’s a largely symbolic gesture because it would take a supermajority in both the State House and Senate and a statewide vote to lift the voter approved ban.
With Republican majorities in both houses, it may be tough just getting a hearing on these bills.
Hoadley says if the Supreme Court legalizes same sex marriage, Michigan will have to clean up a number of statutes to comply. This would give them a head start.
Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof thinks its more prudent to wait until the Supreme Court decides whether its necessary. .
One bill in the Democratic Package would require Michigan to recognize same sex marriages conducted in other states and another would allow same sex couples to file joint tax returns.
