LANSING (WKZO) — This is Sunshine Week, the week that transparency in Government takes center stage, and Michigan House Democrats used it to introduce the Michigan Government Reform and Accountability Plan”
Among it’s provisions: a two year waiting period for lawmakers who want to become lobbyists, full financial disclosure by elected officials, and a ban on anyone getting a contract for more than 100-thousand dollars from someone who received campaign contributions from that firm.
Rep. Brandon Dillon’s bill would make the governor and elected lawmakers Dillon says Michigan is one of only three states that exempts its legislature from FOIA requests from the public.The bills were referred to various committees.
A spokesperson for Speaker Kevin Cotter says any barriers to transparency that exist aren’t there to protect the lawmakers, but the constituents who come to them seeking help.
