LANSING (WKZO) — The Michigan State Police have just become one of the first police agencies in the nation to obtain FAA authorization to fly a drone.
They bought an Aeryon Sky Ranger in 2013, anticipating this request and have been training teams of troopers to fly the 153-thousand dollar aircraft.
Some of the restrictions, it will be kept below 400 feet, and be flown with a two man team, one pilot and one spotter to ensure safety.
They plan to strictly use it for accident investigation and emergency response where a bird’s eye view might be beneficial.
