WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) — An effort is underway on Capitol Hill to ban the use of plastic microbeads in personal care products such as soap and toothpaste because they can soak up toxins in the water, transporting it into the food chain.
Michigan congressman Fred Upton is the Republican co-sponsor of a new bipartisan bill that he says has the support of the industry.
Upton is sponsoring the bill with Congressman Frank Pallone of New Jersey.
They are working to have the ban take effect by January 1, 2018, and Upton feels confident they will have strong support in both the House and Senate.
