KALAMAZOO (WKZO) –Students protesting what they are calling racism at Kalamazoo College disrupted the Board of Trustees meeting Saturday.
Protestors shouted through bullhorns at board members, demanding the creation of an Intercultural Center, to serve as a safe place for “students of color” only.
They are also demanding “increased transparency from the college, and anti-racism training for faculty, staff, administrators and student leaders”.
It follows another recent protest against a student who wanted to open carry a weapon on campus. That request was rejected after angry protests, but also as a matter of College policy.
That in turn triggered communications from organized gun groups and gun enthusiasts about their beleif that the the college is violating the civil rights of the student who wanted to open carry. It also triggered some angry threats that they are taking seriously, and some they are not.
The minority students feel an Intercultural Center will give them sanctuary, a safe place to meet.
Faculty will meet this week to discuss their concerns.
