BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — Who shot a 16-year-old in Battle Creek this week?
After getting conflicting stories from the victim and half a dozen witnesses to a teen shooting Wednesday evening, Battle Creek Police now say that 16-year-old James Wyrick was hit in the abdomen when a gun being handled by his 15-year-old cousin accidentally discharged.
Wyrick was listed in serious condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
The boys apparently panicked and tried to dispose of the 9-mm handgun, which had been stolen, by throwing it into a snow-covered lot across the street from the home on Battle Creek Avenue.
It was recovered and police are now trying to trace the source, despite the fact that the serial number was filed away.
Charges may be pursued once the investigation is concluded.
