KENT COUNTY (WKZO) — Thursday was a very bad day for Shawn Jarrett. It took a Kent County Jury less than an hour to find the 51-year-old guilty of rape and home invasion for assaulting an 85-year-old woman in her Grandville home.
An hour after the verdict came in, the Prosecutor charged Jarrett with open murder for the death of Berta Yolanda Reyes, whose body was found buried in a construction site in April of last year.
Both Reyes and Jarrett worked at the same greenhouse business.
One of the more troubling aspects of this is that Jarrett had committed two nearly identical crimes in Pennsylvania years ago but was only given 30-years in prison.
He served his time, left for Michigan and apparently did it again.
Prosecutors say they waited until after he was convicted of the assault to charge him with the murder, because they wanted to give the elderly victim her day in court, and her own opportunity to acheive some measure of justice.
