DETROIT (WKZO) — After years of unsuccessfully waiting for the Federal Government to cough up the money for a new customs and toll plaza at the proposed Detroit River International Crossing, the Canadians have now agreed they will pay for that too to get the project kick-started.
The Canadians will just extend their contract to keep the tolls on the bridge.
They had already agreed to cover the $2-billion dollar cost of the constructing the bridge and the customs plaza on the Canadian side.
The Americans will simply need to provide the staff. It will be a number of years before the project is finished. Some say it may take until 2020 at the earliest.
The Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge are already the busiest border crossing between the U.S. and Canada.
The new bridge will expand that capacity with a route that connects in directly to major highways.
