VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO) — While Kalamazoo enjoyed mostly clear skies during the day along with bitterly cold temperatures and only a light dusting of snow, that wasn’t the story just to the west, along the Lake Michigan Shoreline, which was blasted by Lake Effect.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says a Mattawan Police officer working several slide offs near the 64-mile marker on I-94 is recovering from multiple injuries after he was struck by a vehicle.
He had just warned one of the motorists to stay in their car when it happened at about 12:30 Saturday afternoon.
Despite suffering leg and head injuries, the officer was able to use his portable radio to call for help.
Deputies were able to administer First-aid until EMT’s arrived and transported the officer to Bronson Lakeview Hospital. Deputies say there were white-out conditions at the time.
An investigation was conducted and the Prosecutor will decide if the motorist who struck the officer was criminally liable.
