KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Kalamazoo and Battle Creek never got the blizzard-like conditions predicted for the area, but the counties to the south and west were hit hard by Lake Effect snow.
Cass County officials declared a snow emergency and asked everyone to stay home. That request has now been lifted.
At one point Saturday, the State Police also asked travelers to stay off I-94 in Van Buren and Berrien Counties because extremely slick conditions and multiple slideoffs had forced them to close portions of the Interstate. .
Kalamazoo and most of southern Michigan experienced wind chills of 20-below or greater Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
There were also some record lows recorded in the area.
It may be clear and sunny, but it remains extremely cold and caution is advised to limit exposure. In fact forecasters say it should remain unseasonably cold, even for February in Michigan, through the week.
That means it will be too cold for salt to work on area roadways and some roads may remain icy and slick.
