PORTAGE (WKZO) — A woman lost her pets and most of her belongings in a Friday morning fire at 4218 Winthrop Street in Portage.
Dispatchers were alerted by neighbors that grey smoke was coming from the vents and eaves and others saw flames in the window at the east front corner of the home just after 11 a.m.
Neighbors told arriving firefighters that they knocked but got no response from inside.
There were no vehicles in the driveway.
The one female occupant did not appear to be home.
They found six dogs and two birds that had been overcome by smoke inside the home.
They estimate the damage to the home at 60-thousand and the lost contents at 30-thousand.
