GRAND HAVEN (WKZO) — Was he a one man terrorist cell? What could he possibly have against the Coast Guard or was he just mentally out of balance? The FBI is investigating.
A man linked to a suspicious fire in Oceana County is being held in Ottawa County after what was initially believed to be an act of domestic terrorism at the Coast Guard Station in Grand Haven.
Police Chief Jeff Hawke says the suspect smashed through the gates using his pick-up truck early Sunday, then rushed inside and began assaulting people.
Hawke says just before that, the suspect called 9-1-1 claiming he had a bomb in his truck.
Coast Guardsmen were able to subdue him and hold him until police arrived.
Residents at a nearby Condominium were ordered to shelter in place until a bomb squad could be dispatched to Grand Haven to check out the truck.
No explosives were found.
The FBI has taken over as lead agency in the investigation.
The 34-year-old suspect lived at a building in Oceana County that they suspect was intentionally set on fire early Sunday morning.
The building, made to look like a 50’s gas station was all but destroyed.
