VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO) — 59-year-old John Serdel from the Bangor area admitted to Deputies that he was a distracted driver when he failed to notice the flashing red lights at a rail crossing and the freight train bearing down on his Chevy Lumina Friday afternoon.
He told police that he was reaching for his bank card out of his wallet and failed to notice the train until it was too late to stop and too late to speed to get out of its way.
The train was only traveling at about 20-25 MPH when it struck the very tail end of his car, ripping off the back bumper and nearly ripping off the trunk too.
He was cited for reckless driving
