ANN ARBOR (WKZO)– Governor Rick Snyder has been admitted to an Ann Arbor Hospital with a suspected blood clot in the leg, what they suspect is a side-effect from his injured Achilles tendon.
The Governor had his hard cast removed on Monday and it had been replaced by a soft boot.
Spokesman Dave Murray says Snyder noticed a problem Thursday morning with pain and swelling in the leg and asked to be taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
He was expected to at least spend the night in the hospital but no schedule has been set for his release.
He has been told to limit his travels for the next few weeks. Murray says he will still be ready and able to deliver his budget message next Wednesday.
The sudden change in schedule forced him to scrub plans for a meet and greet in Kalamazoo with some of the emergency responders who worked the state’s largest ever pileup on I-94 last month, which had been scheduled for late Thursday afternoon at KVCC.
He has also scrubbed a couple of appearances he had scheduled in Grand Rapids on Friday.
Kalamazoo Vascular Sergeon, Dr. Sean O’Brien says its a typical side effect of an Achilles tendon tear.
Because the injury requires a cast, it can constrict the blood flow and that can lead to clots.
He says it can be dangerous if left untreated and the clots move to critical parts of the body, but the Governor should be getting the care he needs to break up the clots.
