GRAND HAVEN (WKZO) — The U.S. Coast Guard is warning people to stay off of the ice that has formed along the coast of Lake Michigan.
Ice formations called “windrows” are enticing some to walk out on the pier in Grand Haven, but Coast Guard officials warn those can collapse with no warning and are “incredibly dangerous to walk on.” The windrows are ice formations that can be as high as 20 feet tall, formed by waves that continually crash against the pier.
The Coast Guard also says this weekend’s snow can hide the cracks in the ice formations, and trick people into thinking they are standing on something solid. In reality, however, those snowflakes are all that stand between being on the ice and plummeting into the frigid waters of Lake Michigan.
