DETROIT (WKZO) — The final charge against Detroit Police Officer Joseph Weekley has been dropped. A judge has approved the Wayne County Prosecutor’s request to dismiss the misdemeanor count of careless discharge causing injury or death.
Officer Weekley was charged in the 2010 death of seven-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones with two trials ending with hung juries. A round from Weekley’s gun struck and killed the little girl during a police raid in search of a murder suspect.
Aiyana’s family is now expected to file a civil suit.
