WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) — A proposal from Michigan’s two U.S. senators to add new regulations and oversight to pipelines running through the Great Lakes to the bill authorizing the Keystone XL pipeline is not part what passed the Senate Thursday.
Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters wanted to add that language, but were turned aside by majority Republicans. The bill approving the pipeline to bring crude oil in to American refineries from Canada passed by a 62-36 vote with the support of nine Democrats.
The State Department has been studying the project for several years but has yet to make a final recommendation on approval or rejection.
