LANSING (WKZO) — Michigan teams have had their share of bad calls during ball games and now a proposed law would protect the refs and umpires from angry fans.
Some Lions fans are still angry about the no-interference call during the Lions playoff game with Dallas just weeks ago.
Now legislation has been proposed making it a three year felony to harass, batter or assault a sports official during or after a game.
The real impetus for the bill was the death of a soccer referee after he was punched by a player he was tossing out of a game in Livonia last year.
The proposed bill is headed for a State Senate Committee. 23-other states already have similar laws on the books.
The bill is SB 0031 and its sponsored by Senator Morris Hood of Detroit.
