WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) — Congresswoman Candice Miller is back from a three day tour of the Department of Homeland Security’s Southwest border security operations. She says that she and her colleagues saw firsthand the security vulnerabilities that underscore the desperate need for the enhance security components included in the recently passed Secure Our Borders First Act. For example, she says, that in San Diego they traveled along the Tijuana Corridor, a popular route for drug cartels trying to cross the U.S. border.
Miller says that while that sector has improved its operational control, illegal activity has migrated to the Tucson and Rio Grande Sectors. The act requires the Department of Homeland Security to achieve operational control of high-traffic areas of the Southwest border in two years and the entire Southwest border in five years. It also and establishes a commission to independently verify that the border is secure.
The group also toured the Tucson area where they talked to ranchers along Arizona’s Southeast border whose properties have become a gateway for dangerous drug mules crossing the border sometimes using children to transport illegal drugs. They were also in the Rio Grande Sector where massive numbers of unaccompanied minors from Central America, flooded the Southern border last year.
