LANSING (WKZO) — Drugs and their byproducts are making their way into Lake Michigan miles from sewage discharge pipes and they’re hurting the fish.
According to new research out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee the drug found in the greatest quantity is the Type 2 diabetes medicine Metformin. They say it changes the hormonal system of fish exposed to it.
While the long term effects have yet to be determined the study did find that the endocrine systems of male minnows were disrupted.
