LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will theoretically provide most of the funding the state needs to restore Michigan’s crumbling roads and bridges, that’s if voters agree to approve the higher taxes to pay for it this May.
Surrounded yesterday by bent rims by his signing desk he held up a piece of concrete that fell from a bridge and said it was an example of that how lives could be lost if action is taken. He thinks voters should support it. The Governor told the gathering he thinks of himself as a pretty frugal CPA and believes these measures are a smart investment to be made by the citizens of the state of Michigan to pour more money into our roads.
The complicated set of bills also includes $300-million for schools, and restores the Earned Income Tax Credit. It provides $26-million for boat docks and ramps and $40-million for at-risk students.
It will mean a one cent increase in the sales tax and it will also raise taxes on truckers and on diesel fuel.
