KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — West Michigan has had a cold week, but Friday it was hit by heavy snow and very cold temperatures too, closing schools early for the weekend and slowing traffic from New Buffalo to the Big Mac.
As if the cold wasn’t bad enough, the winter storm dropped 6 to 12 inches onto the left coast of Michigan and right now, because of the low temperatures and the blowing and drifting, road crews are nearly defenseless.
MDOT’s Nick Schrippa says salt doesn’t work when its this cold.
He says sand just creates more potholes later on and clogs up drains.
He says it isn’t long after they plow that new snow and drifting snow just fills them back in.
Only two things will help. A break in the weather or Spring.
