DETROIT (WKZO) — A New York developer is coming to the rescue of the iconic Wurlitzer Building in downtown Detroit. The building that housed the famous Wurlitzer Piano Company opened in 1926 but has been shut down since the early 80s.
The building has been crumbling for years and in April of 2011 a 50-pound chunk of concrete fell 14 stories through the roof of a cafe next door. Later that year part of the back wall collapsed into an alley and couple of months later a strong wind knocked down another portion of the building’s back wall.
A spokesman for developer ASH NYC says that while they can’t discuss specifics of the deal yet they are, “very enthusiastic about Detroit and look forward to sharing more details in the not so distant future.”
