KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners have said goodbye to Commissioner Stephanie Moore and narrowed the list of candidates to replace her from 15 to 6.
Commissioner Don Cooney said he wanted to find who could best represent the same interests that Ms. Moore represented on the Commission
Vice-Mayor Dave Anderson also wanted someone who had been actively engaged in the community, in a variety of ways.
Other commissioners kept their reasons to themselves.
The six Commissioners were permitted to choose up to five that they wanted to interview. The candidates who were mentioned at least twice became finalists.
Leona Carter was named by five commissioners, Grant Fletcher, William Wells and Traci Hall were named four times. Eric Cunningham was picked by three commissioners and Mark Fricke was chosen by two.
Commissioners will hold a special meeting next Monday night to interview those six finalists and make a final choice.
Each candidate will be asked to give a two minute introductory presentation and then respond to the same list of prepared questions.
Then the Commissioners will try to come up with four votes for one of the six finalists, and that person will fill out former Commissioner Moore’s term.
Commissioner Moore, who was sworn in as a Kalamazoo County Commissioner last week, was showered with praise and given gifts Monday night.
