KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Winter has snapped back with a vengeance, going from unusually mild to potentially dangerous over the last 24 hours.
It was the combination of rain and freezing rain that left roads covered with slush that has now frozen and left a sheet of ice under the lake effect snow. Temperatures have dipped so low, so quickly that salt will no longer help melt that layer of ice, making streets treacherous.
Heavy lake effect bands of snow are causing intermittent white-outs on I-94 in Van Buren and Berrien Counties.
Police agencies are issuing warnings for people to leave early and keep your distance to avoid slide-offs and crashes.
The weather is expected to remain very cold with occasional lake effect snow for the next few days with intermittent Lake Effect snow and bitterly cold temperatures. .
We may may get above 20-degrees before next weekend.
