KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Participants not afraid of a quick chill can take a dive in freezing water this weekend, all to help benefit the work done by the Special Olympics.
The non-profit has announced that it’s Polar Plunge event will take place on Saturday, February 22nd in Kalamazoo. Those who register for the event will get the opportunity to take a leap into a frigid pool right next to Bells Eccentric Cafe on E. Kalamazoo Avenue in the city’s downtown.
Those who sign-up can either take the plunge themselves, or jump with teammates into the water on Saturday morning. Organizers say that registration will start at 8:30 A.M. and the first chance to jump into pool will begin later at 10 A.M.
29 other Polar Plunge events are held across the state each winter to raise money for the Special Olympics organization, with funds going directly to sports activities and health programs for the 27,000 athletes who participate with the group across Michigan.
In 2019 participants raised more than $37,000 dollars during the event, attended by a total of 235 plungers.
Each individual taking part is asked to raise at least $75 dollars, making them elgible to receive a Polar Plunge long-sleeve T-shirt, with those who raise more entered to win additional prizes.
