KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — A year ago President Obama expanded temporary deportation relief for young people and their parents through an executive order because he was frustrated with the slow pace of Immigration Reform in Congress.
On Friday, a lawsuit sponsored by a number of Attorneys General, including Bill Schuette of Michigan will be heard in a Federal appellate Court in Louisiana.
Nayeli Sanchez, a WMU Student who is a DACA Recipient, one of the so-called “dreamers” says at anytime, her mother could be deported.
WMU Senior Jorge Cortez, who is about to get his B.A. says he is not permitted to vote, but if he did, he wouldn’t waste it on Donald Trump. He says the billionaire does represent the kind of hatred and prejudice they are up against.
State Rep. Jon Hoadley joined them in protest on the Courthouse steps on Thursday, saying that families come in all shapes and sizes and need the governments support. .
They are calling on Attorney General Schuette to withdraw from the case and to stop taking actions that split families apart.
The lawsuit argues that if they have no legal right to be here, then they shouldn’t be here, and the President has no right to unilaterally say otherwise without the approval of Congress.
