LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Memorial Day weekend is the time to sit around the campfire with family and friends and the Michigan DNR is reminding you to keep fire safety in mind.
This holiday weekend is calling for thunderstorms off and on and that could leave some areas with pockets of high wildlife danger says Bryce Avery, DNR fire prevention specialist. The DNR suggests you never leave a fire unattended, keep campfires small, have water nearby, and when you put your campfire out make sure you drown it with water and then stir it until its cold to the touch. These type of fires can hold hot embers for several days and reignite after conditions dry again.
So far this season, the DNR has responded to 145 wildfires, which have burned more than 439 acres and threatened 210 structures.
