KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Three aviation students from WMU have finished first in the collegiate division of the Air Race Classic, an all-female cross-country air race that dates back to Amelia Earhart and the pioneers of air flight.
It was the highest finish yet for a WMU Team which has entered the competition several times.
Pilot Lauren Quandt, Co-pilot Shelby Satkowiak and team member Kelly Erdman were not tasked with covering the course in the fastest time, but in the most efficient manner, using weather, fuel consumption, and air-speed to fly the most perfect cross country trip.
They finished first among the 20 collegiate teams and 5th overall.
