UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police is reporting that two of its members, a detective sergeant and trooper, were shot late Wednesday morning in Branch County’s Union Township during the execution of a search warrant related to a cold case investigation.
According to a press release, when troopers announced their presence prior to making entry into the residence, the suspect leveled a long gun at the officers.
They were attempting to take cover when the detective sergeant was shot in the chest and a trooper received a grazing wound to the hand.
The detective sergeant was taken to Promedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
Updates on the condition on the detective sergeant are not available. The trooper did not seek medical attention.
The entire Union City Community School District was initially placed on a lockdown because of the shooting. It was lifted about a half hour later.
The MSP Emergency Support Team is on-scene.
A large number of police officers responded to the shooting incident.
A search for a suspect was conducted in the area of Arborgast and Francisco Roads.
