KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — In the end it all comes down to money.
Kalamazoo School Trustees have approved a resolution endorsing the most comprehensive study of school financing in the State of Michigan to date, which is being funded by the School Finance Research Collaborative.
That group has hired the nation’s top two school finance research firms to look at every aspect of how the schools are funded and how much it costs to adequately educate children.
Superintendent Michael Rice says currently schools are not only funded inadequately, but incorrectly.
He says not only does more money need to be invested into children, but the state has to realize that it takes more money to educate certain groups, the poor and homeless, refugee and immigrant children and special education kids.
The State funded a less comprehensive study last year and it helped shape some of the Governor’s funding proposals last year, but the legislature mostly ignored them.
The goal is to give legislators a guide to follow this time.
