KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC) – One Western Michigan University professor hopes to do next year what another Bronco instructor failed to do twice – replace Fred Upton in Congress.
History instructor David Benac has set up a Facebook page that had a May 29, 2017 post stating that “It’s time for the 6th Congressional District to have a representative who works for the people not for special interests and corporate money.” Running as a Democrat, he tossed his hat into the ring when the 16-term Republican from St. Joseph voted for the American Health Care Act last month after initially announcing that he could not support it.
In 2014 and 2016, Upton defeated WMU Political Science Professor Paul Clements, with a 73,000 vote margin in last November’s election. Upton has been mentioned as a possible Republican challenger to Democratic US Senator Debbie Stabenow, although he continues to publicly state that he has no such intentions of a run for the Upper Chamber on Capitol Hill.
Last weekend, Grand Haven-based emergency room physician Dr. Rob Davidson announce his intention to run as a Democrat against four-term incumbent Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga of Zeeland in 2017.
