LANSING, MI (WHTC) – There were some surprising results coming from a first-of-its-kind concussion study among Michigan high school student-athletes.
The collection of reported head injuries from this past academic year by the Michigan High School Athletic Association showed that, in the two major contact sports that have both girls and boys competing, there was a “startling disparity,” with 30 concussions per thousand participants in girls soccer as compared to 18 for boys, while there were 29 concussion per thousand participants in girls basketball as compared to 11 for boys.
MHSAA officials will be using the data to “identify what physiological, social and psychological factors may contribute to this disparity,” said Executive Director Jack Roberts in a statement, “and how we can better prepare school personnel, and especially coaches, to watch for over- or under-reporting.”
More information on what will be an annual concussion study by the MHSAA is available here. An interview with Roberts is available here.
