PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Board members have approved the purchase of another 350 computers that will be used by high school students at Portage Public Schools.
It’s part of an effort to put computers in the hands of each Portage student by 2019.
“We started three years ago with some pilots in our elementaries and added our middle schools last year,” Dan Vomastek, the district’s information technology director, said on Tuesday. “These Chromebooks will be divided up into 10 carts that’ll be distributed at our high school sites.”
Vomastek says the aim of the one-to-one program is to get students comfortable with technology.
“There’s pretty much no job where having the ability to interact with an electronic device isn’t as important as the ability to read, write, communicate and speak well,” Vomastek said.
Passage of last November’s $144 million bond issue made the $66,000 purchase possible.
The purchase was approved during the board’s meeting Monday night.
