HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Today is National Wear Red Day to spark conversations about the dangers of heart disease, particularly in women. This is Heart month and today is the day you are being asked to not only wear your heart on your sleeve, but everywhere else as well.
Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 death among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds according to the American Heart Association. Michigan State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker of Lawton says that over the past 10-years, the Go-Red-for-Women movement has saved an estimated 600-thousand lives.
That’s why she sponsored a state resolution also declaring today “Wear Red Day” in Michigan with Senator Margaret O’Brien, to raise awareness about the dangers of heart disease and to get the message out that it can be prevented.
