GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – More than 13 months after a 31-year-old Holland woman was gunned down on a Grand Rapids street, her boyfriend was sentenced in her death.
Jermaine Cooper was given the maximum 62 and a half years in prison by Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Quist yesterday after a jury convicted the 36-year-old man of second-degree murder on November 1st. Prosecutors say that he shot Melissa Moore multiple times, execution-style as she attempted to run away from him on November 6, 2015 along Knapp Street near Truxton Avenue. Three Grand Rapids street cleaning crew members heard the shots, one of which saw the victim attempting to flee the scene.
Cooper was captured a month later in a Detroit home and refused a plea deal that would have led to a 40-year prison sentence. He was the father to one of Moore’s sons. She had been employed by a Saugatuck restaurant at the time of the incident.
