PAW PAW (WKZO-AM) — The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing FEMA’s recent assessment of the emergency response plans at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township.
The federal agency held a series of exercises, assessing how ready power plant employees, county agencies and the state of Michigan are if a radiological release were to occur at Palisades. The exercises ended this week.
“The concern of something happening there is minimal, but, if something does happen there, it will be a big situation,” Lt. Bob Kirk said.
Kirk is the Domestic Preparedness Coordinator with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office. He said the results were pretty good.
“Basically, they did not find any reason to be concerned with anything we have done,” Kirk said.
Despite the passing grade, Kirk says they’ll still review and update their response plans as needed.
