CHICAGO (WHTC) – The US Environmental Protection Agency has approved a plan for cleaning up soil contamination at the former Plainwell Mill site. Officials say that the tainted soil would be replaced with clean soil and the ground would be restored. Engineering and land-use controls will insure the effectiveness of the cleanup, with an estimated cost of 4.3 million dollars. The EPA also endorsed a similar final cleanup plan for the Kalamazoo River upstream, from the Morrow Dam to the former Plainwell Dam. The work was necessitated by contamination mostly from former paper mills that were in those areas.
