LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Barry County Rep. Mike Callton has moved a bill through the House that sets up a roadmap for Michigan if voters in the state opt to legalize the use and possession of marijuana.
Callton said it would establish procedures for the procurement, transportation and sale of legal pot. It would also add an eight percent tax to cover costs linked to enforcement and regulation.
“At first, it was just a bill that created provisioning centers,” Callton said. “And now, it’s a bill that’s going to regulate how marijuana’s going to be regulated in the state.”
Callton, a Republican from the 87th district, said he created the so-called “umbrella” legislation after visiting Colorado, where he said he learned about what was and wasn’t working there.
“It’s great to have it out of committee,” Callton said. “It’s been sitting there since January, and I’m looking forward to seeing it pass on the floor to the Senate, then out to be signed by the governor.”
Callton said he’s not necessarily in favor of legalizing the drug, but also said Michigan should be ready if voters opt toward legalization.
