LANSING (WKZO-AM) — State Rep. Aric Nesbitt says he’s happy with a recently-signed bill he authored allowing drivers to show their proof of insurance on their smartphones and tablets, but also says the law is missing a key component.
The Republican says he’d like to see additional legislation establishing a real-time electronic insurance database.
“(It would allow) the Secretary of State to start sharing with the Michigan State Police, in their computer network, who has insurance and who does not,” Nesbitt said during Tuesday’s edition of Kalamazoo’s Morning News on WKZO-AM.
He also said the record would keep people from buying, then quickly canceling a policy to save money.
“A lot of people pay it one month at a time,” Nesbitt said. “You can (currently) make a one-month payment, then you don’t have it.”
Nesbitt says similar databases exist in Colorado, Utah and Alabama.
