LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A bill that would allow guns in Michigan schools just as long as they were concealed will be discussed this afternoon in a State Senate hearing. The measure is being called a “compromise” by its sponsor, Senator Mike Green, because of a gap in the law. Right now it is not a violation to go into a school with a gun, allthough most Michigan schools would immediately go into lockdown if you did.
Senator Green’s proposal would ban open carry but allow gun owners with concealed weapons permits and additional training to pack a concealed pistol in a public school. Some educators say lawmakers should just close the gap and ban all guns from schools. That’s why they call them “Gun Free Zones”.
Governor Snyder has already vetoed one such measure and his staff says his position has not changed.
