MACKINAC ISLAND (WKZO) — A group of scientists and engineers plan to call for the shutdown of Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 pipeline through the Straits of Mackinac this week.
The panel says it’s the only way to prevent a catastrophic oil spill like the one that occurred in Calhoun County.
The group includes the National Wildlife Federation, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and the former director of engineering for Dow Environmental.
They will release a report on Wednesday on Mackinac Island.
Enbridge’s Line 6 pipeline, which was built at about the same time as Line 5, ruptured in 2010 near Marshall, sending thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River around the same time as the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
