KALAMAZOO (WKZO)– Kalamazoo is a city that likes historic structures, new is nice but historic is homey and now the city’s Historic Preservation Commission has singled out five of the best examples for this year’s awards.
The most familiar may be Fire Station #6 on South Westnedge, which began its life as a fire station, until the fire trucks outgrew its bays.
Then for decades it served the community as Gryphon Place in the Vine Neighborhood. Now its been Converted into a fitness center.
Just down the street are the other two commercial winners at 13o1 and 1305 S. Westnedge. A pair of storefronts that have been second hand and antique shops for years, and now have buildings that have been refurbished, that also serve as valued antiques.
Two local homes will also be named as award winners during a Ceremony that will be held on May 28th at the Kalamazoo Community Foundation on East Michigan at 5:30.
