LANSING (WKZO) — Controversial legislation that would cut cash assistance for families with truant children has cleared the State House. The bills would not impact food stamps or housing benefits, just cash assistance. Sponsor Al Pscholka says the only way children will ever get ahead is to be in school, and this is one way of making sure they are going to class.
The legislation just codifies something the DHS is already doing. But Opponents say its unfair to penalize an entire family for the actions of an uncontrollable teenager, and Gilda Jacobs at the League for Public Policy says it will just make a bad situation for many families that much worse.
The bills now head for the State Senate.
