KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — A large group of parents and students appeared at last night’s Kalamazoo School Board Meeting to complain about the recent decision to enforce a ban on Leggings at Loy Norrix High School, and particularly about how it was being enforced.
Female students complained that they felt humiliated being dragged out of class after male security guards judged that what they were wearing was too distracting for male students. Parents said the school staff was being too strict and prudish.
Board members promised to review the policy and Supt. Rice said he would look into how it is being enforced.
Parents and students seemed satisfied that their message had been delivered and that their issue would be addressed.
The Trustees also received a few complaints last night from parents concerned about how they handled the recent gun incident at Loy Norrix.
A student brought a gun to school without intent to harm anyone and it was eventually confiscated after several other students tried to keep it from being discovered. Parents thought the district was slow to react to the issue and slow to lockdown the school.
Supt. Michael Rice says they did everything by the book and it all worked out fine
