KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Gay couples have won a long hard fight for the right to marry, but they are not exactly rushing to clerk’s offices to take advantage of it.
Only half a dozen couples filed in Allegan County on Monday, four in Battle Creek and just one in Van Buren County.
Kalamazoo Clerk Tim Snow says he has seen about two dozen since Friday but expected to see a lot more rushing through his doors.
Snow says with the three day waiting period, anyone who wanted to get married over the Fourth of July weekend had to get their certificate on Monday because they will be closed Friday.
He thinks the Supreme Court’s ruling has relieved the pressure to hurry up and get married.
Snow is expecting the numbers to continue to decrease from here, winding up at the new normal, whatever that may be.
