DEARBORN (WKZO) — AAA of Michigan says based on surveys, nearly 1.4-million Michiganders will journey at least 50 miles or more from home this Independence Day weekend. That’s the most since 2007, before the Great Recession took the wind out of a lot of family’s sails.
It’s a little less than 1% more than the 1.3-million people who traveled last year. The official 4th of July travel period begins Wednesday and ends Sunday.
AAA spokesperson Susan Hiltz says several things are driving the increase, rising incomes, low unemployment, and low gas prices.
We may also want to add weather, which looks like its going to be perfect for the entire weekend.
“Independence Day is the ultimate summer vacation time in our great state. Michiganders will be celebrating freedom with family and friends. They’ll be traveling there by car, boat, plane or train,” said Hiltz, AAA Michigan public affairs director. “
In addition to an improving economy, there are “Four 4th Factors” that are helping contribute to the most travelers since 2007: temperatures are up, gas prices are down, school is out and vacation time is in.”
They say nearly 88 percent of Michigan travelers (over 1.2 million) will drive to their holiday destinations. Air travel is expected to increase 1.4 percent with over 63,000 leisure travelers. 104,000 will be taking cruises, trains and busses.
Hiltz says you may want to make sure the family car is able to handle any extended travel you have planned.
AAA expects to rescue nearly 360,000 motorists nationwide this Independence Day weekend, with the primary reasons being dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts. AAA recommends motorists inspect their vehicle and check the condition of their battery and tires before heading out on a holiday getaway.
